It's simple mechanics like that that make the game superbly satisfying to play. Half-Life: Alyx does away with all this nonsense in favour of an easy access weapon wheel that can be activated by pressing one of the control sticks and simply moving your hand in the right direction. Most VR games allow you to store guns in leg holsters, over-shoulder storage, or on your waist. Those weapons are limited to very few - a pistol, a shotgun, a liberated Combine gun, and grenades - so both weapon and ammo management is easy as pie. To refill you simply reach over your shoulder again to grab what you need and you'll get the ammo for the weapon you're holding. You can only store two items (that aren't your guns) - and even those are stored in your wrists (which is somewhat odd and takes some getting used to).Īmmo can be grabbed and chucked over your shoulder to store it which is superbly simple. Because its a VR game when a location looks good, it looks even more amazing than it would on a screen.

As I'm wandering through a dark hallway, with just my virtual flashlight in front of me to light the way, I hear the voice of my friend. And that, in our mind, is why it makes so much sense for Half-Life to start off its new life in VR. In Half-Life: Alyx, the Citadel looms over all. I wish valve would just hire the Boneworks blokes and put all of their ideas into in tightly crafted and exquisite VR title.We have hazy memories of playing the original Half-Life games all those years ago and being struck by how epic the graphics were for the time. It was already heading into that category. I mean, wow the comfort and accessibility options along with a variety of HMD support. We're going to get a lot of "well, is it as polished, or good, or fun, as HL:Alyx" from here on out. It was inevitable and destined the game will be herald as GOTY material through some facet, and honestly going to be a trend setter for that medium for awhile. Asgard's Wrath (an Oculus exclusive) looked interesting enough, but HL: Alyx helped VR HMD revenues more.
But there really wasn't much of anything else released this year that could hold it's ground against the new "actually a game release" title by Valve.

Also, one of the few or pretty much ONLY worked literally as intended on day one-developed by a huge well-known PC game developer, VR titles of the year.ĭon't get me wrong, I had an absurd amount of immersion-fun with this title and it made me reeling for more.
